Logistics and transport

Getting around Chapada dos Veadeiros

Updated May 2026

How to move between hubs, waterfalls and trails without wasting time or hitting surprises.

Getting around Chapada dos Veadeiros

The Chapada covers a large slice of Goiás inland. Most travellers use three main hubs: Alto Paraíso, São Jorge and Cavalcante. To hop between them and reach waterfalls, a car is still the most practical option.

There is no efficient public transport to attractions and many accesses are unpaved. Without a car, logistics get tighter and transfers or private tours can add up.

Short version: with a car you gain freedom and save time. Without one it still works, but plan each leg carefully.

Chapada by car

Best way to explore with flexible timing and routing. Highways between main towns are usually fine, but final stretches to waterfalls need attention.

  • Good asphalt between major towns; unpaved access on most waterfall roads.
  • Drive calmly: potholes, mud and rocks show up often after rain.
  • Fill up in Alto Paraíso or Cavalcante. Do not rely on fuel in São Jorge.
  • Avoid leaving valuables visible when parking at trails and viewpoints.

Chapada without a car

Without a car the usual pattern is long-distance bus to your base plus rideshare, transfer or guided tours. It works, but needs daily planning.

  • Rideshares between travellers are common in the region.
  • Private transfers and tours solve logistics but raise the budget.
  • Pick lodging close to the sights you care about most.

In practice, almost every outing ends on foot

Even when you drive, most sights mean a trail. Some are easy, others long. Examples with and without mandatory guide:

In the rainy season, confirm conditions before you leave. Flash floods are a real risk at several sights.

Abseiling, canyoning and other outfitter-led activities

Beyond hiking on your own, operators organise abseiling (rapel), canyoning descents, tubing and routes that mix swimming and walking in the riverbed. This is not the same as a classic waterfall visit: gear, a safety briefing and usually advance booking apply.

Rules, seasonality and guide requirements depend on the route and landowner. In heavy rain or high flow, abseiling and canyoning are often suspended. Confirm the day before and prefer companies or guides with clear references.

  • Ask what is included (transport to the start, gear, photos) and how demanding the route is physically.
  • On vertical or river activities, avoid improvisation. Prioritise providers who state credentials, insurance and emergency procedures.
  • Leave slack in your itinerary: these outings tire you more than a relaxed swim at a waterfall.
